Fancy guppies are one of the most popular freshwater fish in the world — and for good reason. They're colorful, hardy, easy to breed, and endlessly varied. Here's everything you need to know to keep them thriving.
Guppy Tank Requirements
Guppies are adaptable fish that do well in a range of conditions, but they thrive best in:
- Tank size: 10 gallons minimum, 20+ gallons recommended for a colony
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 6.8–7.8
- Hardness: Moderately hard water (8–12 dGH)
- Filtration: Gentle filtration — avoid strong currents that can damage flowing fins
What Do Guppies Eat?
Guppies are omnivores and will eat a wide variety of foods. For best health and color, feed a varied diet including:
- High-quality flake or micro pellet food as a staple
- Frozen or live foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms for conditioning
- Spirulina-based foods to enhance color
Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily, only what they can consume in 2–3 minutes.
Guppy Tank Mates
Guppies are peaceful community fish that get along well with most non-aggressive species. Good tank mates include corydoras catfish, mollies, platies, swordtails, mystery snails, and small tetras. Avoid fin-nipping species like tiger barbs, which will damage the flowing fins of male guppies.
Breeding Guppies
Guppies are livebearers and one of the easiest fish to breed in captivity. Females give birth to live fry every 4–6 weeks. To protect fry from being eaten, provide dense plant cover (Java Moss works great!) or use a breeding box. Fry can be fed crushed flake food or baby brine shrimp from birth.
